DOMHNALL GLEESON IN “AMERICAN MADE”

Press release

UNITED INTERNATIONAL PICTURES

DOMHNALL GLEESON, FROM “THE FORCE AWAKENS” TO “AMERICAN MADE”

Popularly known as General Hux in Star Wars: The Force Awakens – a character he will reprise in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Domhnall Gleeson is an Irish actor proving to be one of Hollywood’s most versatile talents—working across a number of diverse roles.

Now, Domhnall (pronounced as Donal) Gleeson stars opposite Tom Cruise in Universal Pictures’ American Made (in Philippine cinemas September 13).

(Watch the new American Made spot at https://youtu.be/zT0jnrXD5t8.)

American Made is based on the outrageous (and real) exploits of Barry Seal (Cruise), a hustler and pilot unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. History. Much to the surprise of his wife, Lucy (Sara Wright Olsen), the charming entrepreneur has gone from a well-respected TWA pilot to a key figure in one of the greatest scandals in modern times. Little could they grasp that what started out as transporting contraband would lead to Barry’s help in building an army and funding a war.

Gleeson, who plays CIA operative Monty Schafer, shows another side of the acting gifts he’s displayed in films from Unbroken and About Time to Ex Machina. Schafer sees Seal as his possible ticket to promotion and beyond, and plays him for what he’s worth.

Director Doug Liman loved the idea of creating an entirely unexpected but powerful adversary for Seal, and found Gleeson was the perfect antagonist. “I didn’t want to do that in the cliché way, with a CIA handler-slash antagonist, surrounded by computer screens and an army of people,” the director offers.

I thought, ‘What if your adversary in the CIA is just in a cubicle, will seize any opportunity and not let anything get in his way?’ Domhnall did an amazing job and, from a cubicle, is a force to be reckoned with.”

As Gleeson researched his role and prepared for production to begin, the actor read several autobiographical books by CIA operatives. “I found the script to be such an easy read. It had a playful tone, and the story was outrageous and suspenseful. There’s a dog-eat-dog feeling to this whole film, which I liked. I think it’s truer than we care to admit about the way that countries run, and the way that the world works.”

One of the most unexpected days of production was when Gleeson found himself way up in the skies. “Doug and Tom took me up in one of the small planes, and did a maneuver to zero gravity,” he reveals. “Then they swapped pilot seats, and Tom turned the plane upside down while Doug shot it on his iPad. It was incredibly fun. Tom is a force of nature and, paired with Doug, they have created their own way of working—a shorthand that, no matter how chaotic, works.”

Of his principal costar, Cruise raves: “Domhnall plays such an original character—the kind we see in all of Doug’s films—ones that have this authenticity on screen. With Bourne and Mr. and Mrs. Smith to Swingers, he’s so invested in the world that he creates and in these characters they have a unique humanity to them.”

American Made is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

“AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL” OPENS EXCLUSIVELY AT TRINOMA, GLORIETTA 4 AUG 30

Press release

Paramount Pictures’ An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power – the sequel to the Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth – will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Trinoma & Glorietta 4) starting August 30, 2017.

Former US Vice President Al Gore continues his tireless fight, traveling around the world – including the Haiyan-devastated city of Tacloban, Leyte in the Philippines -- training an army of climate champions and influencing international climate policy. Cameras follow him behind the scenes – in moments both private and public, funny and poignant -- as he pursues the inspirational idea that while the stakes have never been higher, the perils of climate change can be overcome with human ingenuity and passion.

In 2006, when Vice President Al Gore became the focal point of An Inconvenient Truth, he was the quintessential man at a crossroads. Needing to move forward meaningfully, Gore exited the political stage and followed his gut and his heart into uncharted territory. He threw everything he had – all his energy, intellect, drive and voice -- into one almost overwhelmingly huge issue that had long lit a fire within him: confronting the increasingly alarming prospect of a global climate crisis that could literally threaten the end of human civilization.

At that time, the climate crisis was itself at a crossroads. Scientific consensus was coalescing around what the full human, economic and planetary costs of climate change might be if the world made zero effort to cut manmade greenhouse gas emissions. The far-reaching scope of the threat was just breaking through to the public -- and the fossil fuel industry was putting up serious resistance.

But that was then. And in the 10 years since, so very much has changed.

The inspirational story of just how amazingly far the battle to halt climate change has come -- and why Gore now says the momentum is unstoppable -- forms the core of An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.

The film sets off in a fresh direction to become an inside view of positive change-in-the-making, as it reveals how Gore has faced off against fierce forces and has weathered disappointments -- only to rebound and magnetize a groundswell of people ready to take on the most momentous human quest of our time.

Action is now taking place where despair threatened to reign. The groundbreaking Paris Agreement of 2015 has unified the world to tackle greenhouse gas mitigation. Developing countries are leap-frogging inefficient old grids and coal fuels for sustainable alternatives. Most tellingly, Gore is no longer the voice in the wilderness calling to be heard, but the loudest and clearest in a symphony of rising voices, from all nations, walks of life and political stripes, determined to make profound alterations in record time.

All of this gets captured in a film shot in an exhilarating “direct cinema” style, breaking the wall between audience and subject. Cameras shadow Gore on an odyssey through Greenland, India, Europe, Asia and across the U.S.A. As they follow him through the corridors of power and into the trenches with survivors, scientists, unlikely leaders and ordinary people moved to extraordinary actions, unscripted, off-the-cuff moments bring new insights to his life, our times and the reality Gore says we can’t ignore: now that we know we must change and we can change, we have to do it faster.

TWO ORPHAN GIRLS AT THE FOREFRONT OF “ANNABELLE: CREATION”

Press release

TWO ORPHAN GIRLS AT THE FOREFRONT OF ANNABELLECREATION

Two young ladies, Talitha Bateman and Lulu Wilson, play orphaned girls at the heart of the story of New Line Cinema's horror-thriller AnnabelleCreation (in Philippine cinemas August 23).
                                                              ©Warner Bros.

In the film, several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creationAnnabelle.

Talitha Bateman, who plays Janice, says of her character, “She has a deep sadness to her because the others get to go and play, and they tease her about her polio, even though they do love her. It’s like an older sister teasing, but at the same time Janice is sensitive and it hurts her feelings. Seeing them exploring outside makes her feel slightly envious and depressed. Then she comes in the house and sees the chairlift on the stairs. She's undecided about it at first, but then the other girls urge her to get on. Once she starts up the stairs, all of the girls clap and cheer for her, and that's when she feels at home.”

But it’s when Janice takes that ride up the stairs that the seeds of trouble are planted. “She looks toward the dead daughter’s room,” Bateman offers, “and you know how you can feel a good presence? You can also feel a bad presence. And I think Janice feels something eerie because of Annabelle. It’s crazy, because she’s just a doll, but she’s the catalyst for all this evil and there’s so much power in her. People love superheroes and they have power, but they use it for good. It’s the opposite with Annabelle. The demonic spirit that lives inside her uses its power to do horrible things. That’s what scares me about her.”

Lulu Wilson plays the angel-faced Linda, Janice's best friend among the orphans. Despite being the younger of the two, Linda worries for her friend. “I think she first senses something’s wrong when Janice breaks the rules by going into Bee’s bedroom.” Of course, Linda follows. “She sees the Annabelle doll staring right at her and that really freaks her out.”

Wilson even steered clear of the prop off-camera. “She’s ginormous and her eyes literally follow you like the Mona Lisa’s. If you’re looking at the Annabelledoll, you’re like, ‘Oh, she’s staring at me, I gotta move.’ Then when you’re in another position and you look back at her, she’s still looking at you. And the eyebrows are slanted in a way that it looks like she’s always planning to get you, and it’s really creepy.”

AnnabelleCreation is Wilson’s third horror film, and she credits director David F. Sandberg with one of her best experiences in the genre. “He is a really awesome director,” she says. “Usually when you shoot a scene, you don’t feel like it’s scary until you watch it, with the music and everything. But when I did scenes with David, he made it feel really scary. It was really fun.”

JAMES WAN EXPANDS “THE CONJURING” UNIVERSE WITH “ANNABELLE: CREATION”

Press release

Regarded as one of the most creative filmmakers working today, James Wan expands “The Conjuring” Universe with the second chapter in the Annabelle series – New Line Cinema's “Annabelle: Creation” (in Philippine theaters August 23, 2017).

(Watch the newly released “Toy Gun” Clip from “Annabelle: Creation” below.)

Produced by Wan and directed by David F. Sandberg (“Lights Out”), “Annabelle: Creation” is the follow up to 2014’s hugely successful “Annabelle.” In the new film, several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a doll maker and his wife welcome a nun and six girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home. They soon become the target of the doll maker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.
James Wan

When I was directing the first ‘Conjuring’ and we were designing the Warrens’ haunted artifact room, I remember between myself, the studio and the producers, we all kind of looked at each other and said, ‘You know, it would be incredible if we could tell the stories of each of these objects,’” Wan recalls, referring to the collection the couple had confiscated over their years of paranormal investigation.

Even then, we felt that giving Annabelle that prologue opening was cool, but we sensed she had a lot more stories to tell,” Wan continues. “Every time that doll appeared on screen for just those few minutes, people shifted in their seats. Audiences react to her.”

Wan was thrilled with the manner in which Sandberg embraced and enhanced the horror-verse he began. “David has given this film a very classic period look that takes it outside of the traditional horror films we’re familiar with in contemporary cinema,” Wan says, “and I think that’s been the key to keeping this universe feeling fresh and unique. Each of these standalone movies has a very different flavor, yet they’re all connected.”

Producer Peter Safran agrees. “What James has built and David has continued with ‘Annabelle: Creation’ are films that tap into the fears we hold in our very makeup, our DNA. We’re all drawn to the idea of this doll, this inanimate object that can somehow wreak such devastation.”

These films are a great example of why we love to go to the movies,” Sandberg concludes. “It’s a safe, shared environment where we can experience such a great range of emotions, from fear to excitement and more. And in this case, we get to find out how another piece of this ‘Conjuring’ and ‘Annabelle’ world is tied together…and maybe even get a hint at what’s to come.”

James Wan is currently in production directing “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe, and Patrick Wilson. The DC Super Hero film is scheduled to be released December 21, 2018.

Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, launched its slate with the highly successful “Annabelle,” released on October 3, 2015. The film was produced by Wan and Peter Safran and grossed over $252 million worldwide. The second release for Atomic Monster was “Lights Out,” directed by David F. Sandberg and produced by Wan (along with Lawrence Grey and Eric Heisserer). The film was released by in July 2016 and earned over $148 million. Next up for Atomic Monster is the latest title in “The Conjuring” universe, “The Nun.” Currently in production, the film is being directed by Corin Hardy and produced by Wan and Safran, and is set for release on July 13, 2018.

Annabelle: Creation” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

In Philippine cinemas starting August 23, Annabelle: Creation (read my non-spoiler review here) has David F. In Annabelle: Creation, several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.

Sandberg directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote Annabelle. The film stars Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave), Lulu Wilson (Ouija: Origin of Evil), Philippa Coulthard (After the Dark), Grace Fulton (Badland), Lou Lou Safran (The Choice), Samara Lee (The Last Witch Hunter), Tayler Buck in her feature film debut, with Anthony LaPaglia (TV’s Without a Trace) and Miranda Otto (Showtime’s Homeland, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy).
